I may be stubborn on the rent vs. buy issue but here are the reasons why my position makes sense.
Lost in Colonisation 
I agree. Buying is not always the best option. All the things your landlord or apartment company has to come fix for you – you have to pay for them when you own the house. Any mortgage payment you make should actually be less than the rent you can afford because you have the added expense of upkeep.

It all depends on location, of course. Properties prices in NYC and surrounding areas are crazy. It will cost almost double to buy than rent in my area!
