Who did I piss off?

These happened in the last 24 hours:

  • Got hit in the eye by a softball during warm up. Left lens shattered and thus need replacement. Partly my fault for not wearing my contacts but also I had a lot of trouble putting contacts in the week before to I decided not to yesterday (and I was lazy).
  • Misplaced my wedding ring somewhere. I swear I left it on my office desk yesterday but it is not here now. Could have been lost in the softball field when I took off my glove after getting hit by the softball. Won’t know until I get home tonight to check the glove. I am not really holding my breath…
  • Got a spyware, for the first ever time in over 15 years, on my PC laptop and now I don’t have internet connection. Didn’t have time to fix it apart from running anti-spyware apps which found nothing.

So, do I have to sacrifice a goat or virgin or something to appease some god somewhere?

The way sugar supposed to be presented

The way sugar supposed to be presented

This Saturday Leah and I went to Babbo to celebrate our ten years anniversary. We had fantastic food there. First we had a three goat cheese truffles for anitpasti, then mint ravioli with spicy lamb sausage source for primi. After that Leah had wild strip bass for secondi while I had grilled lamb chop.

Finally at the end of the meal when the coffee came, and before our deserts arrived, the waiter left the sugar ‘box’ on our table. Instead of the regular affair where the box contains a bunch of sugar substitutes and a few packets of ‘real’ white sugar, let alone brown sugar, Babbo has it the right way round!

Just look at it! Sugar sticks, brown sugars, white sugars, and then oh, what’s that between the brown and white sugars? A few packets of sugar substitutes for those who are dieting!

Real sugar rules!

A Decade

According to my calendar (and memory), today is the ten years anniversary since Leah and I first dated. Time flies by, indeed. Sentimental and nostalgic seekers please head to Leah’s blog. Only dull posts are allowed here (These are not the fun post you are looking for. Move along).

(Ok, what’s the point of having a semi-geek blog with geek content in each post? So geeks read on, normal people move along.)

Keeping track of anniversary dates aren’t easy even in this day and age of advanced PIM such as Outlook or iCal. Try doing that 10 years back and you can imagine the effort I had to put into. First PIM I used is the Starfish’s Sidekick (remember that?) on my 386 monochrome laptop. Next was the first version of Microsoft Outlook, and then Outlook 97. Finally when I migrated to the Mac I moved the data to Palm Desktop which wasn’t (and still isn’t) that good a PIM. Finally when Apple released iCal (and iSync for syncing with PDA/Phone) I settled my calendar data in iCal.

And this concluded the geek broadcast.

Manchester

Going back to Manchester (photos here) after 7 years was a revelation. We landed at Manchester Airport last Wednesday morning after a red-eye Continental flight from JFK. Food was bad even by economy seat standard. Our very stylish hotel is in East Didsbury, which is south of centre Manchester and just as we were getting settle down my mom called me on the cell phone. It turned out she and my dad were already outside Manchester even though I’ve emailed her two weeks beforehand that we were meeting up for lunch on Friday instead of Wednesday! Still, since they were already in the city we changed our plan and took the number 42 bus into Chinatown in the centre.

Surprise of the week

On Tuesday we went to Alcatraz Island for a tour. Leah and I had been there before last time we visited San Francisco more than 5 years ago. So nothing too exciting happened there. The revealation was the Boudin Bread place on the piers. 5 years ago it was a red brick building with very little indoor seatings forcing all the tourists to seat and stand outside to consume the sourdough clam chowder. Now in its place is a very modern metal and glass building with a shop on the left and a demo bakery on the right. There are even outdoor seatings!

The real surprise was when we got back from the island and decided to eat at the Boudin Bistro on the second floor of the new building. Since it is in the tourist location I kind of expected over-priced average food with bored sevices. In fact we got average-priced excellent food with great service! We were so impressed with their food that not only left a large tip, but we also planned to have lunch there on Friday.
