Pattern Recognition

I was bracing myself for a long haul when I started reading William Gibson‘s latest novel, Pattern Recognition. Why the long haul, you ask? Because base on his previous works, I expected great story line but one of the strangest, most neurotic writing style I’ve came across. Best probably only by British Sci-Fi writer Jeff Noon.

150 pages into the book, I was surprised and gripped. Not only did William Gibson had written this novel in style that almost approaches normal, the story is interesting and gripping right from the beginning. One does not require to be high on banned substances to understand what he was writing!

The locations (New York and London) probably biased my feelings but nonetheless for the first time in long while that I can’t put down a book. I want to read it all the way to the end. Now. Forget about sleep. Fuck work. Sod off TV, have TiVo. Food? Piss off until I finish the book…

I miss British comedy

Leah and I went to see Eddie Izzard last night in New York and it reminds me of how much I miss British comedy. Even though American comedies are funny but they all (at least almost all) lack the subtleties that British comedies have. Oh well, I guess I have to live with Coupling (the British version) on PBS and the occasional British comedians visit in New York.

Kill Bill

Kill Bill must be the best action movie of the year. QT obviously has not lost his touch after six years. The fight scenes are one of the best, especially after those CG Neos in Matrix: Reloaded. And of course there is something romantic about using samurai swords instead of lead bullets. Sure the movie is violent but it is more on the stylish side than gruesome. The inclusion of the anime part is genius to say the least. Though I think not all audience will appreciate that but my Asian background definitely allows me to enjoy the stylistic expression of QT through anime.

I can say with certainty that Kill Bill will do extremely good in the box office in Japan and Asia. Come on, a beautiful blonde woman wielding a samurai sword in massive fight scene? The Japanese may even classify the movie as porn!

Oh and did I mention the soundtracks? They are so cool that I am actually tempted to go into a record store and buy a CD! You may not think this is a big deal but it must have been over a year since I last physically buy a CD. Shame iTunes Music Store does not carry Kill Bill’s soundtracks yet. Otherwise it will save me a trip to the shop and allows me to give RIAA the two fingers salute.

Can’t wait till volume 2 in February next year.

Dreamweaving

As a consequence of canceling my UK internet account with Demon Internet, I have to move my photo site to Leah’s .mac web space. This prompt me into consider revamping the site. It was originally built more than three years ago using Microsoft FrontPage! Now it looks old and outdated. So last night I finally downloaded a free Dreamweaver sample site that works pretty well as a photo site and started hacking around. To rebuild the whole site is going to be a large undertaking but I think I am finally fed up with the old site enough to force myself into action.

You can see this new site (work in progress) here. All of the images are not setup yet but I will be working on it throughout this long weekend.

To build this new streamlined site, I am using Dreamweaver MX, Firework MX, and Photoshop Elements 2. And if anyone knows how to setup Dreamweaver to upload my files directly to .mac iDisk via WebDEV, please let me know.

Holidays

This evening I have finally booked our holidays in Orlando, FL in December. This will be our first vacation in 12 months. I certainly need it.
