Friend of a friend (FOAF) and blogging networking

From the Six Apart weblog, Six Log, I’ve discovered a new social networking application for weblog authors called Plink. Well, at least for authors who have a FOAF XML file defined.

I’ve added my profile to their list and so far no one is connected to me, yet. But it can be very interesting to find out who is connected to who as this list grows. So I encourage all of you, who use TypePad or already have FOAF XML file generated by your blogging tool, to add yourself to the Plink list.

Of course the irony here is that this I’ve found this FOAF application via Six Apart’s weblog, whose company name, I think, plays on the phrase, “Six Degrees of Separation”.

Browser user agent checks

One of my main complains of Safari since its release is that my bank, Citibank, does not work with it. At the beginning, I’ve tried turning on Safari’s debug menu and changed the user agent string to something more ‘normal’ like ‘Windows MSIE 6’. It did not work then and I was under the impression that it is still not working.

OmniWeb 5 coming soon

So OmniGroup put up a preview page of OmniWeb 5 today. Seems like it will be a great browser, but I am not sure about advertising the ‘tab’ feature when there is no actual ‘tab’ per se. I am especially interested in the ‘Workspaces’ feature as well as the ‘RSS/XML feeds viewing’ feature.

I will have to try it out thoroughly before shelling out the $29.95 asking price. There are some shortcoming in Safari that OminWeb addresses (noticeably Citibank access) but similarly current version of OmniWeb, 4.5, has its own shortcoming too (no tab browsing and auto-fill is not really auto).

With the rumored release of Safari 1.2 around the same timeframe, let’s hope OmniWeb 5 will be a competition to Safari instead of just playing catch up.

Sad news to close out the year…

The news of the death of the Hong Kong star, Anita Mui, brought back my childhood memory. That is, until I reached the end of that BBC news article and also found that Leslie Cheung, another Hong Kong star during my childhood years, had committed suicide earlier this year! This is just so shocking to me as I grow up with these stars, just like the current generation grow up with Britney, Justin, etc. Not that it is fair comparison as Anita and Leslie were both highly acclaimed singers and actors who won awards through their talents, unlike Britney who can’t sing nor act.
