Gmail, finally

I finally got an invite to a Gmail account, thanks to Spread Firefox. But now that I have a Gmail address I am not sure what I am going to do with it. I already have three ‘normal’ email addresses that I use regularly so a forth one really doesn’t make much difference. And since Gmail does not have POP3 access (yet) so it is not as convenient to use compare to my regular emails.

NetNewsWire 2 Public Beta!

I’ve been using a very old NNW2 beta and the difference between that and this public one are huge! Very much polished. I haven’t tried out the new weblog editor, MarsEdit, yet but from the screen shots it looks very similar to ecto 2 but with less advanced features (noticeably the WYSIWYAG mode). Of course, I will be sticking with ecto anyway for the obvious reason. 🙂

Windows == Beta Software?

Analyst firm Garner has confirmed what I (and most people in the software industry) knew and felt for years, that we should all treat Windows as beta software.

A rule of thumb that I was told many years ago was that it always take Microsoft three versions of any products before it is usable. Just look at the original Windows, version 3.1 was the one most adapted. Then the next phase was the Windows 9x series which accumulate to Windows Me. Then the “proper” OS that was NT. Ignoring NT 3.5 for good reasons, it was Windows XP that gained most users’ trust and started the migration from Win9x to full 32 bit OS.

Firefox Preview Release 1

Mozilla Firefox browser has finally reached the 1.0 status! Download and try it out! I’ve been using it as my main browser on my PCs for over a year and and a half and it redefines the way the web should be surfed. IE? What’s that?

But then again, may be not…

I thought I will like ecto 2’s WYSIWYAG editing capability. I was definitely excited by it. Before I go on though, let me explain my expectation of this feature.

From the screen shots and description, I imagined that it would work similar to Dreamweaver or even Frontpage! What do I mean by that? I expect the ability to switch between HTML code mode and Preview mode seamlessly (in ecto 2 they are called ‘HTML mode’ and ‘Rich Text mode’ respectively). This will allow me to compose new blog post in HTML mode, add link, add html tags, etc. while switching to Rich Text mode as a form of quick preview. I understand that the Rich Text mode is not designed to be used like this, but hey, it is there someone will use it this way 🙂 And by switching modes between HTML->Rich Text->HTML (I will call this ‘mode flipping trick’ from here on), I do not expect ecto to generate additional html tags for me.
