Is computer profession a profession?

I love food and preparation of food, e.g. cooking, so naturally I like the Food Network channel on the cable TV. But I never seem to be able to watch much as Leah’s TV schedule doesn’t leave me with much time for ‘my TVs’. Unsurprisingly I have been gorging on Food Network for the last few days! Emeril Live (whom Leah has nicknamed ‘Greasy Gnome’), Boy Meets Grill, and Iron Chef America to name just a few.

Of course one thing in common is that all these shows have a fully kit-out kitchen, and this got me thinking. Why is it Ok for other professionals such as chef, painter, writer, musicians, etc. to have they tools of trade in their house and get appreciated comments from friends and family, while computer professionals like myself get the ‘wasteful’, ‘excessive’ looks when friends and family discover I have more than one computer?

Why is it Ok (or in fact encouraged) for chef, or painter, or whoever, to practice their trade in their own home, e.g. cook for their friends, paint a picture for special occasion, etc., while it is considered anti-social, nerdy, for computer professionals like myself to spend my leisure time on the computer/internet? More puzzling is that if my time spent on the computer is for something creative, let’s say working on digital photos verses developing my own application, that’s considered time worth spending. Why is it not Ok for me to have multiple computers when others can have multiple ovens, cooking pans, knives, paint brushes, etc.?

Is this because computer industry is still very young and the majority of the population still does not consider computer job as a profession? Or is it because the work we do is so complex and nebulous in compare to others (like cooking) that most people does not, and will not try to, understand what we do and thus do not value our work?

Day Off

Last week I’ve finally reached the point where I need to take some time off work. So I took today off and the plan was to play the new Halo 2 maps in the morning and then work on ecto after lunch.

The new Halo 2 maps are fantastic! Slayer games in Warlock is just absolutely bloody fucking insane! Lots of dark corners to ambush people and with the newly rebalanced weapons damage, lots of grenades were thrown. Not to mention tonnes of close quarter combat with the loser being beat down.

Containment is huge! CTF or Assault game will be great with all three types of vehicles (Warhog, Banshee, and Scorpion!) available. Lots of sniping and rocket action.

I haven’t played Turf with any other players yet (I played Warlock and Containment in custom games with people from XBox Live) but Turf’s layout will be perfect for ambushes. Lots of above street level hiding places where the attacker can be easily caught in cross fires from multiple directions.

As for ecto development, I managed to fix a few minor bugs but I got bogged down with setting up a MT test environment as well as a corrupted Thunderbird profile. This requires me to start with a brand new profile and download all the emails again from the server. Not a big deal? It is when you have 4000+ spam emails that I don’t but do want to download again. I don’t because it takes so long and so much bandwidth, but I do because I want to train the Thunderbird Junk filter with these spam emails. Thunderbird also seems to have problem with recognising spam emails that I’ve already downloaded so it tries to download all 4000+ of them again every 15 mintues! In the end, I went to the server and deleted all of them. I hate POP3 email server, why can’t we all have IMAP email server (like .Mac?).

Moblogging with Treo

So here is a post made from my Treo using mo:Blog. I like this app a lot, with its support for hi-res screen and html snippets. But the showstopper issue I have with it is its inability to let me choose different category when composing a post. Instead I have pick one catergory during the setup of the blog. WTF??? I won’t be that bad if it caches the category list for offline use but since it doesn’t that mean I’ll have to retreive the list OTA everytime I want to switch.

Skype Part II

So I am talking to my friend from the U.K., Simon, over Skype right now. He is in New Zealand on 55.6kbps dialup connection and the sound quality is very good. There are occasional break up in sounds but that’s probably because we were both using the internet while we talked. Also sometimes the echo comes through and I can tell there is some delay in hearing myself. I am sure if Simon is using broadband the quality will be excellent. Pretty nifty for talking to someone half way around the world for free (more or less)!

Also, it seems that there is a weird interaction between Skype and ecto. Whenever I sent a post from ecto, Skype will drop my call. Weird…

I hate dialup

So here I am with three computers nearby doing my duty for my mother. I wasn’t planning to upgrade her PC until I realised that it is my college PC which is a Pentium 166MHz with 64MB RAM running Win98! So I took pity on that poor 8 years old machine and bought her from PC World a brand new P4 2.6GHz 256MB RAM XP Home machine for less than the price of a iPod photo 🙂

Since neither the new machine has a floppy drive (it does have a DVD-RW R9 drive and 5-in-1 memory card reader though) nor the old machine has a USB port for my 64MB flash drive, I have to zip up her files and upload it to my web storage then download it to her new PC. Now it won’t be so bad if this is done over broadband connection, but all she has is a 45kbps dialup it is painful! Transfer that normally would take minutes via wireless network over DSL becomes hours over the dialup. I feel like I’ve been thrown back to the stone age!

At least this machine will last for another 2-3 years before I need to do this all over again. And with the DVD-Rewriter in the new machine at least I can just burn a DVD next time and be done with the transfer in minutes!
