NetNewsWire 2 Public Beta!

I’ve been using a very old NNW2 beta and the difference between that and this public one are huge! Very much polished. I haven’t tried out the new weblog editor, MarsEdit, yet but from the screen shots it looks very similar to ecto 2 but with less advanced features (noticeably the WYSIWYAG mode). Of course, I will be sticking with ecto anyway for the obvious reason. 🙂

Unstable iMac?

Charles Cook comments that the new G5 iMac doesn’t look stable. I thought that about the new LCD displays too, especially the large 23″ and 30″ ones. But when I saw those displays in person couple of weeks ago, they turn out to be very stable despite the small metal stands. I would expect the new iMac to be stable too.

But then again, may be not…

I thought I will like ecto 2’s WYSIWYAG editing capability. I was definitely excited by it. Before I go on though, let me explain my expectation of this feature.

From the screen shots and description, I imagined that it would work similar to Dreamweaver or even Frontpage! What do I mean by that? I expect the ability to switch between HTML code mode and Preview mode seamlessly (in ecto 2 they are called ‘HTML mode’ and ‘Rich Text mode’ respectively). This will allow me to compose new blog post in HTML mode, add link, add html tags, etc. while switching to Rich Text mode as a form of quick preview. I understand that the Rich Text mode is not designed to be used like this, but hey, it is there someone will use it this way 🙂 And by switching modes between HTML->Rich Text->HTML (I will call this ‘mode flipping trick’ from here on), I do not expect ecto to generate additional html tags for me.

Ok, so I was wrong

I know I said I didn’t mind reading HTML code in my post when I compose it. But you know what? After using the latest ecto 2 for awhile in WYSIWYAG mode, it is so much easier on the eyes! Though there are a few annoyance that slow me down. First I am so used to using Cmd-U to insert a link. Now Cmd-U is used for underline in WYSIWYAG mode. So I have to actually hit the hyperlink button instead. Second is that while in WYSIWYAG mode, there is no way of copying or editing existing URL short of switching to plain text mode. But apart from that, I love it 🙂

Update: WYSIWYAG mode also removed any keyboard shortcuts for inserting HTML code that is not defined in rich text editing mode. Not to mention in this mode, applying some extra HTML code block around these HTML code that I inserted. Also if the default editing mode is set to Rich Text, switching from Rich Text editing mode to plain text doesn’t actually give me the original plain text. What I get is the plain text version of the Rich Text editing mode with Convert Linebreak turned off! I think I will stay using plain text editing for awhile.
